Why we built it
Search "best Italian near me" and you get a wall of four-and-a-half-star averages, sponsored pins and lists written by people who never left their desk. Volume and hype win. A neighborhood trattoria making pasta by hand every morning can sit below a chain with a bigger marketing budget.
We wanted rankings that combine what thousands of diners say with an honest look at what's coming out of the kitchen, and that tell you exactly how each score was reached.
What we cover
We're starting with San Diego County: Little Italy, North Park, La Jolla, Hillcrest, the Gaslamp Quarter and out to the coastal North County cities. Our lists cover overall Italian restaurants plus pizza, fresh pasta, trattorias and gelato. Once San Diego is complete, we'll expand city by city.
How we stay independent
Nobody can pay to be ranked, and every score starts from genuine reviews by real diners, with spam and incentivized reviews filtered out. Our methodology explains the score in full, and our editorial policy covers corrections, updates and how we handle requests from restaurants.
Based in San Diego
We live and eat here. That's why San Diego comes first: we can visit, photograph and re-check the places we rank rather than relying on data alone.
